Leg 2 Cape Town to Melbourne

First time in the Southern Ocean for the Volvo Open 70 fleet. The leg from Cape Town to Melbourne, via two Ice Gates and past two points scoring gates, was always going to be exciting, but nobody thought that it would be this much of an epic.

Leg 2 saw the fleet’s first foray into the Southern Ocean as they took on the course from Sea Point in Cape Town to Port Phillip in Melbourne. Along the way, the opportunity to pick up vital points at the two scoring gates of Kerguelen Island and Eclipse Island, plus two ice gates to keep the boats out of danger.

ABN AMRO TWO with some fast southern ocean sailing

After a light wind start, breakdowns began; Brasil 1 and Ericsson returned with damage, but ABN AMRO TWO grabbed a new monohull world 24 hour run record while movistar and Pirates made pit stops for repairs. Then Brasil 1 dismasted!

ABN AMRO TWO closed on their teammate in the closing stages, but had to settle for second. movistar made a respectable third place, Pirates of the Caribbean took fourth and ING Real Estate Brunel fifth. Ericsson arrived in Melbourne aboard a ship, Brasil 1 on the back of a truck.
